Stage 1 Water Conservation is in Effect

Monterey Peninsula: Special rules for a special community: The Peninsula is now operating under Stage 1 of the Expanded Conservation Plan. This is a joint conservation program between the Monterey Peninsula Water Management District (MPWMD) and California American Water, in effect since March 1, 1999. Adhering to this plan is critical to protect our water supply and the sensitive natural environment of the Carmel River.

Under Stage One, a limited two-day per week watering scheduling is required – unless ET controllers are being used - and water waste is prohibited.

Rainfall Status & Regulatory Compliance Status

Water Supply Status: Rainfall during March 2012 totaled 3.94 inches and brings the cumulative rainfall total for Water Year 2012 to 11.42 inches -- 60% of the long-term average. Estimated runoff during March 2012 totaled 3,840 acre-feet (AF), bringing the cumulative runoff total for WY 2012 to 11,235 AF -- 21% of average. Usable storage, which includes surface and groundwater, was 31,060 AF or 96% of average through March. This storage equates to 82% of system capacity. In addition, 428 adult steelhead were counted in the fish ladder at San Clemente Dam.  Fish rescues have not yet began.

This report concerns the water supply status for the Monterey Peninsula Water Resources System (MPWRS) as of April 1, 2012. This system includes the surface water resources in the Carmel River Basin, the ground water resources in the Carmel Valley Alluvial Aquifer and the Seaside Groundwater Basin. The report is limited to the water year that began October 1, 2011 and will end September 30, 2012. The rainfall and stream-flow values are based on measurements recorded in the upper Carmel River Basin at San Clemente Dam.
